The collection, including models, has high interpretive potential, part of which has been realised by the displays in the museum buildings. It  demonstrates  the various techniques and technologies involved in mining.  The major themes in the displays are:
Minerals
Prospecting
Mining, particularly base metal mining, both alluvial and hard rock mining
The Great Northern Mine
Ore treatment: crushing, concentrating, smelting
Mining communities and towns
Ethnic groups involved in mining
Support industries e.g. market gardening, timber supply, transport
